Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her creative and artistic side when she was a young girl due to her aunt Denise. The aunt was on the night shift as nurse so she could indulge her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay loved the film West Side Story, which she brought to her. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how art can be used to promote activism. DuVernay was raised by a mother who was socially aware and taught her to utilize the arts as a means of expressing herself. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. Her father was a witness to the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduation, she studied at the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay was in college at the time she began to become interested in production for broadcast journalism. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of one of the members of the jury as well as look through their trash. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalistic duties and decided to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay found a job immediately out college, as a new publicist at a studio. In 1999, she founded her own firm that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency. The company launched a number of promotional and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
